The Departments of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Medicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invite applications for a position as Postdoc in the field of HIV cure as per 1 November 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a fixed-term full-time position for three years.
Internationalization is part of Aarhus University’s mission and it continuously works to strengthen the international profile of the University through a series of initiatives which will increase international research partnerships and the number of international students. AU also hosts visiting researchers of all career stages for both training and knowledge transfer purposes. This is also true in the Department of Clinical Medicine, the largest department on campus. Research conducted within the departments 30,000 m2 of research space leads to 2100 peer-reviewed articles annually. The AU Department of Clinical Medicine is located within Aarhus University Hospital (AUH).
AUH develops and provides highly specialized treatment, research and education at an internationally renowned level. AUH has an annual budget of more than 800 million Euros and is the second largest hospital in Scandinavia with a campus exceeding 400,000 m2 in size. AUH has 1150 beds and about 10,000 employees and has a major focus on research and innovation, as evidenced by the close interaction with Department of Clinical Medicine at Aarhus University and related biotech and biomedical industry partners.
The Department of Infectious Diseases consists of a bed unit with room for 22 patients, an outpatient clinic and a research unit. Furthermore we have a special interdisciplinary unit, which includes a HIV counselor, a dietitian, a psychologist and a priest. The department has a high-tech quarantine unit for patients with highly contagious and dangerous diseases such as Ebola. The research unit which is located on 3 floors adjacent to the clinical ward and outpatient clinic includes laboratories, office spaces, and a clinical research unit specialized in carrying out any type of clinical trial spanning from smaller investigator-initiated phase 1b/2a trial to large vaccine trials. The departments main focus research areas are HIV-cure, Immune system defects, Global infectious diseases and Vaccine development.

About the research project
The position is embedded in longstanding research program focused on the development of a successful HIV-1 cure strategy. HIV-1 persists in infected individuals despite antiretroviral therapy. This persistent HIV-1 (e.g. transcriptionally silent or latent intact proviral DNA in memory CD4+ T cells) causes viral rebound if therapy is interrupted. Therefore, our lab and clinical research unit are actively pursuing novel strategies to eradicate persistent HIV-1. Our most research clinical trials have evaluated monoclonal broadly neutralizing antibodies as well as immune modulators. The Søgaard lab is involved in multiple ongoing research collaborations with other European, North American and Australian research groups and international collaboration integrated in the post doc’s work.
Your job responsibilities
As Postdoc within HIV cure your position is exclusively research-based. You will contribute to the development of the department through research of high international quality. In your daily work, you will work closely with colleagues on your project, where you will receive supervision and guidance.
Your main tasks will consist of:
- Independent research of high international quality, including publication.
- Exploring virologic and immunologic mechanisms for HIV remission which can potentially be explored in future HIV curative strategies.
- Actively engage in your project design and management.
- Independent student supervision
- Active participation in international workshops and conferences will be part of the post docs responsibilities.
Your competences
Appointment to these postdoc positions requires academic qualifications at PhD level earned while conducting research in a relevant field (i.e. molecular biology, immunology or virology). Applicants are expected to have published as first author in respected peer-reviewed journals and have significant experience with sequencing, phylogenetic analyses and/or advanced flow cytometry. Applicants also need to have experience with standard methods in cellular and molecular biology and be eager to meet the challenge of developing these projects to the highest international scientific standards.
As a person, you have good interpersonal skills, are inclusive and team-oriented and able to contribute to a good work environment. We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English.

Terms of employment
- Appointment as a postdoc requires academic qualifications at PhD level.
- Further information on the appointment procedure can be found in the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities.
- The appointment is in accordance with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (Akademikerne).
- Remuneration is in accordance with the above, and the Salary agreement catalogue for staff at Health.
- The yearly base salary for a fulltime postdoc is between DKK 482.603,31 and DKK 536.927,17 depending on the years of working experience after achieved MSc degree. The base salary includes a position related supplement and pension (17.1 %). Additional supplement(s) for special qualifications can be negotiated. Authorisation supplemement(s) will be granted, if relevant for the position. Your local eligible trade union representative at Aarhus University negotiates your salary on your behalf.
- Researchers recruited from abroad are offered a special researcher tax scheme with a lower tax rate.
